Lincoln wrestlers get past Rafer

Selma's Abraham Lincoln Middle School had a busy week on the wrestling mat.

The Eagles, coached by Onesimo Lopez, defeated Rafer Johnson of Kingsburg 66-36 on Thursday, and took third place on Saturday at the John Muir Invitational in Corcoran.

In the match with Rafer, Selma fell behind early as the Kingsburg school won the first three matches. Rafer's Merina Doi won by an 8-1 decision over Gilbert Flores at 67 pounds. Jonas Tirado blanked Isaiah Tovar 7-0 at 74 pounds. Rafer's Javier Gasca pinned Isaac Delgado in the third period of the 88-pound match. At 95 pounds, Lincoln's Steven Delgado recorded a second period pin of Sam Samaniego. Adrian Rodriguez of Lincoln pinned H. Gonzalez in the first period of the 102-pound match.

In the 116-pound match, Lincoln's Isaiah Morfin pinned E. Cholico in the second period. Rafer's Jacob Tirado recorded a third period pin of Rene Zamora at 123 pounds. At 151 pounds, Rafer's Anthony Tirado pinned Oscar Yanez.

Recording forfeit wins for Selma were Rico Aguilar, Biri Mendoza, Justin Lozano, Ozzy Colin, Nathan Zapata, Andrew Reyes and Christian Lopez.

At Corcoran, Lincoln finished third behind Reyburn and Kastner of Clovis, and ahead of Alta Sierra of Clovis.

Individually, Justin Lozano and Rico Aguilar were champions at 151 and 130 pounds, respectively. Oscar Yanez was second at 144, avenging a loss to Tirado by beating him in the semifinals in double overtime. Third place finishers were Isaiah Morfin at 109 pounds and Julio Rodriguez at 116 pounds. One match from placing were Steven Delgado and Adrian Rodriguez.

"Everyone wrestled really tough, and the coaching staff at Lincoln is proud of everyone," said Lopez.
