Selma Tournament begins on Monday

A 13-team field is set for the 52nd annual Selma High School Easter Baseball Tournament, which will be played this year on March 17-19.

The Greater Kiwanis Club of Selma is the new sponsor of the tournament, replacing the Selma Kiwanis Club.

The tournament field for 2008 includes Selma, Kerman, Cesar Chavez of Delano, Taft, Chowchilla, Oroville, Immanuel, Sierra, Riverdale, Shafter, defending champion Liberty of Madera Ranchos, Wasco and Mendota.

Fourteen tournament games will be played at Selma High School's Allen Cropsey Diamond at Bobby Cox Field. Other games will be played at Immanuel High School in Reedley, Liberty High School in Madera Ranchos, Kerman High School, Taft High School and on the Selma High School junior varsity diamond.

Selma High will play a doubleheader on the opening day of the tournament (March 17) as they face Cesar Chavez at 4:30 p.m. and Kerman at 7 p.m.
Other games at Selma High on March 17 feature Sierra against Riverdale at 9 a.m., Oroville and Taft at 11:30 a.m. and Cesar Chavez against Chowchilla at 2 p.m.

The March 17 schedule at Immanuel High has Immanuel facing Wasco at 9 a.m., Sierra against Shafter at 11:30 a.m. and Shafter against Immanuel at 2 p.m.

The March 17 games at Liberty feature the Hawks against Mendota at 11:30 a.m. and Liberty against Wasco at 2 p.m.

Selma High will play one game on Tuesday, facing Oroville at 7 p.m. at the Cropsey Diamond. Other games on that field feature Chowchilla and Oroville at 9 a.m., Chowchilla and Taft at 11:30 a.m., Taft and Kerman at 2 p.m. and Kerman against Cesar Chavez at 4:30 p.m.

Two games will also be played on the Selma Junior Varsity diamond on March 18 with Wasco facing Sierra at 11:30 a.m. and Sierra taking on Mendota at 2 p.m.

The Wednesday, March 19 games on the Selma High varsity diamond feature Shafter and Liberty at 9 a.m., Selma and Chowchilla at 11:30 a.m., the third place game at 3 p.m. and the championship game at 6 p.m.

The Liberty Hawks captured the 2007 championship of the 51st annual Selma High School and Selma Kiwanis Tournament with an 11-1 domination of the Chowchilla Redskins at Selma High School's Bobby Cox Field.

Liberty was the only team among the 12 teams in the Selma Tournament field to go through pool play with a perfect 4-0 record. Chowchilla went 3-0-1 to win the other pool.

The now graduated Chris Gonzales, who pitched and played third base for the tournament champions, was named the Selma Tournament Most Valuable Player.
