Classes begin on Monday

The new school year, which begins Monday, will start out with several new additions. At Selma High School alone, 13 new classrooms, a dining hall, a set of restrooms, a made-over weight room and a new girls locker room await to accomodate Selma kids as they ring in the new school year.

Selma Unified School District Superintendent Mark Sutton was happy not only about the space that the new rooms bring, but by the way they will allow the High School to organize the building by subject.

“By adding these classrooms we’ve really been able to put our departments together,” Sutton said. “Our teachers (will be better) able to collaborate.”

Every facility is ready for students, except for the girls locker room ” the lockers have yet to arrive. With the projected completion set for Sept. 1, Sutton said things should be finished before the locker room is needed for P.E.

“(I’m) hoping (the lockers) will be here so we can get them installed,” Sutton said. “The first couple of weeks of school is when kids don’t start dressing up for P.E. anyway. Hopefully lockers get here sooner.”

As for the other buildings that are just sitting and waiting for students to fill them, Sutton was pleased with how they came along ” and to him, it seemed a promise for a good start to the school year.

“It’s always nice to have new facilities, just having something new is nice in general,” Sutton said. “I know the high school (faculty and staff) I’ve talked to are very excited about it.”
