Letters to the Editor

Editor: On Tuesday, July 7, my car and two other cars were broken into. I did the police report and was fine with everything. On Wednesday night, July 8, I received an e-mail from a friend stating she knew the names and descriptions of the two men who committed the crime.

On Thursday, July 9, I called Selma Police Department and was put on hold by dispatch for about 15 minutes. I decided to go into the police department to make things easier. There was a sign stating to pick up the "black phone" for immediate assistance. When I picked up the phone a female voice stated someone would be right with me and hung up. I waited in the lobby for about 45 minutes to be helped. While I was waiting a female (name unknown) came out of the door to the back and walked out the front door without even acknowledging I was present. No one ever attempted to help me. Finally, disgusted with the lack of service, I left and went home.

I am completely disappointed in our PD. I understand that with budget cuts it's harder to help people right away. But being the only one in the lobby, I believe I should have been helped in a timely manner. Police are put here to help and serve the public. If they aren't doing their job, who will?

I believe a story should be put into our local newspaper to inform the public on how our tax paying dollars are NOT being spent properly.

" I agree with you 100% Ms. Wells, I too have been treated horribly by the dispatchers at the Selma Police Department. I even complained about the incident to their supervisor and left feeling worse about the whole thing. I was and am very disapointed in our police department. I truely believe that the problems start at the top because why else would I have been treated the way I was if not for the examples that are set to line personnel? Something to think about. As a citizen of this city, I don't care if personnel are on furloughs, city workers still have a job to do and I expect they do it with professionalism and respect, you work for us not the other way around. "

" I have been treated very poorly by the dispatcher on duty at the police department as well. When I call the police department I don't want to be placed on hold, I want immediate action, no I DEMAND immediate assistance. This has happened to me more than once and I find it unacceptable service. It has gottne to the point where I don't even call anymore to report crimes, what for, I only get placed on hold. The night dispatchers are the worst! "

Citizen Complaint wrote on Jul 26, 2009 10:34 PM:

" I have a citizen complaint about the rude dispatcher that helped me one July evening. I called in a reckless driver and was treated as if I was interrupting and bothering the dispatcher. Knowing that their are two dispatchers on at night, I hung up and called back in hopes of getting a better responce fromt he second dispatcher. Guess what? I did, this goes to show that whomever is answering the telephones at night, one should not be there and the other is doing her job. I wish I would have gotten the terrible dispatcher's name so I could make her name known to all of Selma. Next time I call the police department the dispatcher better identify themselves, it is very rude when they don't. I wonder what the police department does when we citizens complain about the poor service we are getting. I bet if we complain, we will be listened too with nothing ever taking place to correct the poor service. But, I doubt it will get better. "

" " I also agree with the compliants about Selma Police Deparment, I have tried to seek help from OUR department and its hopeless!! Is it because their busy parked at Shafer Park wating for cars to pass by with tinted windows, loud mufflers, people talking on their cell phones, etc...Its like Hello...there's a crime going on!!!! Or maybe because their parked at their girlfriends house while on duty!!!! Im dead serious....Selma Residents....Its true!!! I wish..something can be done about this...ASAP!!!" "

" It all comes down to lack of supervision and poor leadership! Simple, no if's ,and's, or but's about. If I am wrong, then please, someone prove me wrong! "

What is going on wrote on Jul 29, 2009 4:07 PM:

" What is going on at our Police Department? Something is going on for there to be so many problems. Is it me or all the people that work at the police department unhappy? I would like to hear from members of the police department. Please tell us what is happening? This site is a perfect place to do this without worry of being harrassed at work for speaking out. You will feel better if you share! "

" I realize the Selma Police Dept. has many calls to respond to and up to now have not really had any complaints. Lately it seems that they are on a roll to give people tickets left and right. I have seen them hiding on McCall St., on Floral Ave. in the cemetary Drive ways, behind the feed store. I know that the city and state budget is bad but do they really have to hide. It is so obvious that they are having to write up people to make up for any cuts. What probably used to be a simple word of caution is now a simple fine. Also I feel they should lead by example. No cell phone conversations while they are driving. I have seen this a few times by our officers. Or maybe the law doesn't apply to them.
Any way I feel better now. Have a safe drive and be careful when driving. "

CItizen Complaint wrote on Aug 3, 2009 8:47 PM:

" Why is it that people that work at the police department get away with violating the same laws that we citizens are expected to follow. Example, I recently got a fix it ticket for tinted windows, yeah I know it is against the law, that is not the problem. The problem is that the same police officers who are giving us people tickets are also violating the same laws they are giving tickets for. I have seen tintted windows, no front plates, expired registration, modified exhuasts, just to name a few on the cars belonging to people who work at the police department. One day I am going to take digital pictures and email them to the newspaper to prove my point. "

" I was directed to this blog after over hearing a discussion @ a local store Amongst regular neighbors and friends we have had our own discussions about the current status of the police department and such but I had never really read or checked this site, until now! It seems that this ongoing problem with the police department has been for quite some time, why is nothing being done about it? Mr. Lujan do you not have the authority to nip this in the bud? It is obvious that there is also a problem with the city manager and the assumption of the local residents is that he is just soaking up the city money until his contract runs out. After watching the news the other night and seeing the reporters have to ask about a police officer on probation being busted for DUI was the clincher for me. A waste of this cities precious dollars and for this police department to have hired such a problem knowing that there was already problems in that department not to mention the scandal of Measure S?! Answers as citizens we demand answers! I do intend to be at the nest council meeting! "
