Car in fatal crash from carjacking in Selma

A gray Dodge Neon involved in a fatal crash Aug. 8 in Dinuba that killed eight people, including five children, was car jacked from a man outside the Selma Denny's restaurant just hours before the fatal crash. According to the Selma Police, the carjacking victim, David Sperl, was outside Denny's restaurant at 12:30 a.m. Aug. 8 when he was approached by three Hispanic males. One of the suspects hit Sperl over the head with a silver revolver and took his vehicle keys, wallet and vehicle. The suspects drove away in the Sperl's vehicle. His car was a 2005 gray Dodge Neon, the same car involved in the deadly crash. Denny's is located at 2763 Highland Ave.

Selma Police Lt. Christie Ediger said the stolen Dodge Neon was the same vehicle involved in the crash. "It's still an open investigation and we're not completely sure that it's the same individuals that carjacked the Neon," she said. "It could be the same people or it could be a couple different people."

At 1:52 p.m. Aug. 8, Dinuba Police attempted to make a traffic stop on a Dodge Neon on Nebraska Avenue east of Crawford Avenue. The 2005 Dodge Neon, which had three occupants, did not pull over and a pursuit followed.

The driver of the Dodge Neon allegedly ran through a stop sign of Nebraska Avenue and Road 120 and collided with a 1997 GMC Sierra pickup truck traveling southbound.

All five children in the GMC truck were killed. None of the occupants in the car and truck were using seat belts.
All three occupants in the stolen Dodge Neon died at the scene of the crash. There has been witness that the police car in pursuit of the Dodge Neon was very close to the car. However, the Dinuba Police Department has not said it knows how far back the police car was.

The Dinuba Police only had one car pursuing the Dodge Neon. The police car pursued the Neon about 3.5 miles before it ran through the stop sign at Road 120.

The Tulare County Coroner's Office identified the three people who were in the gray Dodge Neon and died Saturday in the collision. The three occupants were Arthur Rivas, 19, of Dinuba; Richard Carrasco, 16, of Dinuba; and Oscar Esparza, 17, of San Diego. Authorities said Esparza was the driver.

The California Highway Patrol identified the deceased children from the GMC truck as Jochelyn Grace Salazar, 7; Monique Janae Salazar, 4; Michael Alexander Salazar, 3; and Sienna Rose Salazar, 1. They died at the scene. Carlos Eric Salazar, 8, was pronounced dead a few hours later at a hospital.

Their parents, Carlos Salazar Jr., 29, and Jennifer Salazar, 26, were reported in fair condition Sunday at Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno.

A memorial fund has been established at Bank of America for those who wish to help with funeral expenses. Details: Mirtala Elizondo, 827-0699.

" TRAGIC, TRAGIC, TRAGIC. These parents world has just crumbled. There are no words to even begin to describe the hell and emotional pain they are going through and will go through for the rest of their lives. The officer involved in this is not to blame but I'm sure he's broken over this. He was doing what officers do. The officer had only pursued them for 3.5 miles before this happened, Thats a short distance, had he known it was stolen he would have still pursued it until it became to dangerous. If he had never known it was stolen, Im sure he would have terminated the pursuit soon after. The family wasnt wearing seatbelts, just like many of us fail to do everyday. They were just on their way to a game. They were doing what families do. The guys who carjacked and robbed a man (this was probably not their first time) , chose to flee from police... Well I guess they were just doing what they do, and now their families are in shattered too. The crimes of these three young men have led to a lot of pain. "

" It's truly a shame that a family feels it needs to pack FIVE kids under the age of 8 into a pickup. If the parents had more brains maybe a couple of their kids would have survived.
Instead it's the police officers fault? (Reading the comments at the Fresno Bee's website)
You gotta be kidding. "

" How sad that 8 young lives were taken in such a senseless act! A high speed chase, how many cars get stolen or car jacked in any one day? These high speed chases should never take place! 4 families shattered how about what the officer/officers witnessed? He is to blame for this tragic, senseless what they call a deadly crash! I beleave that the dinuba police department should foot the funeral cost for the 8 lives that were taken due too this senseless car jacked, stolen, not pulling over for a traffic infraction, HIGH SPEED CHASE turned faital! This is the least Dinuba PD could do. I also think that the families involved/both sides shoujd NOT! sue the police department either. Because NO amount of money could never bring them back! Thats only if they pay the funeral cost for all 8 victims "

" Carl Rowe....

This family has a mini van witch has carseats, but it broke down just a few days before this happened. Please be respectful to this family. The parents do have brains as well as a HEARTs that will FOREVER be crushed!!! Nobody needs to point fingers at them. You have no idea what this family is going through, and i PRAY that you never have to! No family should ever have something this TRAGIC happen to them. May God Bless your HEART! "

" PRAY! PRAY!PRAY!
THIS COUPLE IS SUFFERING A PAIN MANY OF US DON'T KNOW. THEIR FUTURE IS VERY UNCERTAIN AS TO, CAN THEY SURVIVE THIS TRAGEDY? CAN ANYONE? MAY THEY HAVE OUR SUPPORT AND PRAYERS. NOT JUST FOR ONE DAY BUT FOR TIME IT TAKES. WHAT A SADNESS TO LOSE ALL YOUR CHILDREN AT ONE TIME AND IN SUCH A HORRIFIC WAY. MAY LAWS BE CHANGED TO PROSECUTE THESE INDIVIDUALS WHO CHOOSE TO LIVE THEIR LIVES BY INFLICTING PAIN AND SUFFERING ON THE INNOCENT BY THEIR ACTIONS.
IT IS NOT A TIME TO JUDGE, AS SOME HAVE COMMENTED BUT A TIME TO LEARN FROM THIS. THEY DON'T NEED ANYONE MAKING COMMENTS AS TO WHY THEY DIDN'T TO THIS OR THAT. I AM MORE THAN SURE THEY ARE SUFFERING AS TO WHY THEY DID OR DIDN'T. PLEASE RESERVE FROM MAKING THEIR LOSE ANY MORE PAINFUL .
MAY GOD'S PEACE AND COMFORT COVER THE MINDS, HEARTS, LIVES AND FUTURE OF THIS FAMILY. "

" Carl Rowe- why don't you use your brain, these parents had no clue that a stolen car was going to take their children's lives!!! This is why they call it an accident. At such a young age, these two parents now have to find the strenght to go on and with many prayers they will be as good as they can due to the circumstances. Not only will I pray for this family but for you Carl Rowe, sounds like you need it!!! "

The Police are to blame wrote on Aug 19, 2009 11:35 AM:

" There is no doubt in my mind who is to blame for this horrible act. Sure it is the bad guys who are to blame, but I also put blame on the police who should have stopped chasing the bad guys. Was catching these fools worth taking the life of all involved? I think not! The on duty sergeant or whatever supervisor was on duty at the time should have terminated the pursuit as soon as it began. I wonder what Dinuba Police policy on pursuits is? Has anyone asked? Now I wonder if our police department, Selma, would do such a stupid thing. Based on what I have read about them and the lack of leadership at their department, I would almost bet they would do something as stupid as what Dinuba police did! "

" It hurts so much to read how HURTFUL some people could be... I'm sure all of us thought, "what were the parents thinking?" but I know many of us have done it... where we think, "oh we're just going around the corner, we don't need a seatbelt." So if we've done it, who are we to post such comments and hurt the parents even more... I'm sure they are hurting enough, wishing they could turn back time. Why would we want to hurt them more with our painful comments? Can anyone put themselves in these parents' place? Why do we live in a world, where immediately someone is to blame for whatever happens... why can't we stop and try to think of the pain of others due to the tragedy and try to be there for them? Why can't we pray for them? Why can't we try to be supportive and explain that life took it's course, and we are all here to fulfill a purpose and once that purpose is fulfilled we have to go (I understand if some don't agree), and that's life's course. God didn't put us on earth to be here eternally... "

" What happened on Aug. 8th was a tragic accident. But I don't see how two parents could be withoout common sense. If your van is broken down and you can't load all your children in a pick up truck. Then only the child that was going to play in the game and one parent should go to the game. It is against the law for children to ride in cars withoout seatbelts. It is not the fault of the Dinuba police. He was doing his job. As far as I am concerned, It is the thoughtless parents' fault. "
